SOCIAL DAIRY ENTERPRISE!
In Bhutan, cheese is more than just food; it’s a big part of the culture, eaten with almost every meal, and something people are proud of. For many generations, local farmers made traditional cheese like datshi using old methods taught by their ancestors. Despite its great taste, Bhutanese cheese never really reached a large market. But that changed when an individual decided to do something about it.
Sherab Dorji is a young social entrepreneur who completed his bachelor’s degree in environmental science in the USA and returned to Bhutan. While still a student, he founded the Khemdro Dairy and began working with a small group of dairy farmers in the Phobjikha Valley. Khemdro Dairy (KD) is a social dairy company that works with smallholder farmers, especially women farmers, to directly improve their livelihoods by providing a fair and guaranteed market for their milk.
